Student Organized Charity Event - Merry Mardi Gras
Students from Metalworks Institute hosted a charity event called “Merry Mardi Gras” that raised over $400 for the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, in December.
Penny Sims, one of the student organizers, said “Merry Mardi Gras was a great success and a pile of fun. There was a full house at Wild Wing in Oakville and everyone had a great time.”
Over 100 people came out in support. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Anne-Lise Dugas, a 17 year-old folk singer/songwriter working on her debut album called, “Moving Though Spaces”, Journey to Aspen, a band from St. Catherine, who is set to release their new EP, “It’s Impossible To Look Tough Eating Ice Cream”, singer/ songwriter Brad Soucie, and one of Metalworks Institute’s own students, Joel Martin.
The event was hosted as part of a final assignment for the “Events Planning Production” course, at Metalworks Institute.
Everyone in the group was involved in gathering donations for door prizes. Prizes included an MBox from Protools, four hours of recording time from Metalworks Studios and a Molson basketball net amongst others.
Sims, who was one of three students responsible for marketing the event gained experience in creating artwork, posting a website and even managed to get a spot on Q107!
“The day was a lot of fun and it was so rewarding,” said Sims. She also added the process taught her a lot about communication, organization and the importance of staying on top of every detail.
“It’s very rewarding creating an event that is a success,” said Sims who thinks she’d like to get into venue management and event planning in the future.
