Metalworks Faculty Profile - Joel Kazmi

Joel Kazmi, Producer and Engineer, brings over a decade of industry experience to the classroom at Metalworks Institute. He began his teaching tenure at the institute in 2008, and his experience with Metalworks Studios, dates back about twelve years.

Asked about his teaching experience at Metalworks Kazmi said, "What I enjoy most about teaching at Metalworks Institute is that it allows each instructor to have their own teaching style. There is no real conventional way of relaying the information to students. For myself, I like to share my experiences and industry anecdotes with my students...I feel that it helps them relate to the material which can be quite technical at times.”

Kazmi’s music career began in 1994 when he began working as an assistant engineer at Velvet Sound Studios. When Kazmi left Velvet Sound, he interned at Metalworks Studios, before going back to school. After graduating Kazmi came back to Metalworks Studio. He worked as a staff engineer at the studio from 1998 to 2003.

He also worked as a contract engineer with Sony/BMG between 2004 and 2005. Here Kazmi helped coordinate the building of their in-house recording studio, and worked with artists such as Kalan Porter and Sloan.

Kazmi has an extensive list of engineering and production credits on his resume, including Jacksoul’s Juno Award-winning 2006 release mySOUL. He has also engineered on numerous gold and platinum-selling albums at Metalworks Studios, including releases by N’Sync, Sum 41, The Tea Party and Sugar Jones, to name a few.

Kazmi teaches Recording Engineering at Metalworks Institute. He said, "My experience at Metalworks has been quite fulfilling. I've enjoyed watching some of my former students get a good running start at their careers in the industry.
