Metalworks Institute Celebrates its
2008-2009 Graduates
Metalworks Institute celebrated its class of 2008-2009 graduates, on Saturday, January 30. The red-carpeted, catered affair took place in the Auditorium of the Institute.
Over 200 people, including graduates and their guests, enjoyed d’oeuvres, cocktails and the music of Double A Jazz in the lobby, before the ceremony.
Brian Allen, Master of Ceremonies and MWI Instructor, began the evening by welcoming all those in attendance and congratulating the graduates on their academic achievements. This was followed by introductions to MWI’s Academics Director Craig Titus and Senior Program Director Pier DiBiase who presented diplomas and honours diplomas, to students from our various programs.
This year a special honourary diploma was presented to Teresa and David Lippingwell, in memory of former student James Lippingwell.
Kenny Bridges from Moneen also performed for our graduates and their guests.
Hailing from Brampton, Ontario, Moneen formed more than a decade ago, in 1999. In 2005 Moneen split an EP with Alexisonfire on Dine Alone Records where each band covered two of the other band’s songs, plus an original song. That same year Moneen filmed a documentary entitled The Start to This May Be the End to Another, where they documented the recording process of The Red Tree. The Red Tree was released in April 2006 and the documentary was released as part of The Moneen DVD: It All Started with a Red Stripe in May 2008. The DVD was also nominated for a Juno that year. Moneen released their fourth studio album The World I Want to Leave Behind in September 2009.
After the stellar performance by Bridges, MC Brian Allen introduced the keynote speaker, Alan Cross.
Alan Cross is the Senior Program Director for Corus Interactive and Integrated Solutions, the online arm of Corus Radio. He was Program Director of 102.1 the Edge/Toronto between 2004 and 2008, and was named PD of the Year at CMW in 2005, 2006 and 2008.
Cross also researches, writes, produces and hosts the acclaimed weekly rock documentary program The Ongoing History of New Music. It began in 1993, and now includes over 600 one-hour episodes, “making it the longest-running music documentary in Canada and one of the longest in North America—if not the world.”
Following Alan’s remarks was the distribution of the Academic Achievement Awards. Full list available below.
Gil Moore, Founder and President of MWI, concluded the ceremony by congratulating the class of graduates, and wishing them success in their future endeavours. He also announced this year’s MWI’s Founders Award: Jodi Shaw.
Once the official graduation ceremony concluded, graduates and their family and friends were invited to enjoy a buffet style dinner, with more music from Double A Jazz.
Thanks…
The evening wouldn’t have been possible without all the MW staff and MWI student volunteers- Thank You!
And finally, a big Thank You to all our Educational Partners for their continued support.

Congratulations to all the 2008-2009 MWI Graduates!
