On May 27th at Metalworks Institute, I had the opportunity of not only watching a great presentation by Yves Frulla, but I also got to meet him personally.
For those who don’t know, Yves Frulla is the keyboardist in Celine Dion’s touring band. He’s been playing sold out shows for almost 20 years all around the world, recorded three live albums, and appeared on numerous TV shows with Ms. Dion, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, The Arsenio Hall Show and Oprah.
As a Celine Dion fan since her first English album (Unison), I was excited to experience with Mr. Frulla what it’s like behind the scenes in Celine’s band. Instead of playing great songs from different Celine Dion albums, he showed the audience what his job as a musician entails, and what he hears and sees while the audience is enjoying the music and watching a great performance.
While he played his keyboard, he would stop the song and play to a click track that he hears in his earpiece, and uses at every live show. He would play a track on his computer and show the crowd how each instrument in the song sounds alone, eventually adding the other instruments and pieces that Celine’s band put together until they are satisfied with the song.
Yves Frulla is a brilliant and versatile songwriter, producer and keyboardist who is one of the most experienced musicians in the world, and I got to meet him for free at Metalworks Institute. This free event included a draw to win M-AUDIO gear that was worth over $2000. What more could you ask for?
