Faculty Profile: Brian Moncarz

"Brian is one of the hottest young producer/engineers around.”

- Bob Ezrin (Producer, Pink Floyd, Kiss, Jane’s Addiction)

Brian Moncarz has a deep passion for music and it is this love that allows Brian to get the best possible performances out of his bands in the studio. Moncarz began honing his organic production style 10 years ago in various Toronto area studios. A musician himself, Moncarz’s list of credits includes The Junction (Universal Music), Kyle Riabko (Aware/Columbia), Silverstein (Victory Records), Pilot Speed (formerly Pilate, Maple Music), Rise Electric (featuring Lukas Rossi, EMI Publishing), Machete Avenue (Underground Operations/Universal), plus engineering gigs with Bob Ezrin and David Bottrill (Tool, Silverchair, Peter Gabriel).

While attending the 2005 Juno Awards, Moncarz was introduced to legendary producer Bob Ezrin. This meeting led to the Hall of Famer and Moncarz working together at Whirlwind Sound, a studio that Brian established in 2000. With Ezrin’s guidance, Brian built up Whirlwind Sound as a great home for bands to make excellent recordings. 2007 proved to be a great year for Moncarz and Whirlwind Sound.

The Junction album was released in February of ’07, with Exclaim magazine noting “The Junction present to us 12 well-developed, sparkling indie rock tunes featuring amazing production, courtesy of Brian Moncarz, the way their unique, bright songwriting has always deserved.” In March, Moncarz produced a track for Silverstein. The track appears on the Fearless Records Punk Goes Acoustic 2 compilation, alongside The All American Rejects and +44.

With all of his hard work and dedication, Moncarz was able to land an engineering gig with producer David Bottrill. Brian worked on the We Are The Take album with Bottrill. Out of this relationship, Brian and David decided to open a new studio together, and in the summer of 2008, Whirlwind Sound evolved into Rattlebox Studios. The new studio has already proven to be a step forward for Moncarz, who recently worked with Dine Alone artist Moneen.

“I've been working with Brian Moncarz for the last several years. He is a top class engineer and producer and is always able to put musicians at ease. It is always my intention to encourage musicians to feel that they are doing their best work and Brian is always supportive of this and remains calm even during the most stressful of sessions. We've had such a productive working relationship that when I felt it was time to open a studio and needed a partner, my obvious choice was Brian.”
