Tuesday February 17th, 2009 - Rick Fines Guest Lecture
Rick Fines loves what he does! He has been playing music professionally for 24 years now. At 43, he is a veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America. He just returned from Alabama where he took first place in the Sweetgum Bottom Acoustic Blues Competition. His song "Riley Wants His Life Back" won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King as one of the judges! He won the Maple Blues Award for Acoustic Act Of The Year twice (98, 99) and was nominated three times for the Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year award. In 2004, Rick was nominated for the third time for Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year, as well as the Best Male Vocalist award. His 15 years with Jackson Delta won recognition from both the Juno and the Handy Awards. This is a public event and MWI students are welcome to bring guests.

Friday February 20th, 2009 - An Evening with Ken Scott
Attention all MWI Students: For one night only, Backroom Studios in association with Metalworks Institute of Sound & Music Production presents, An Evening With KEN SCOTT!!! On Friday, February 20th, spend an evening listening to Ken Scott talk about one of the peaks in British recording. This promises to be an entertaining evening for both studio buffs and music fans alike! Through the use of audio clips, Ken will break down the multi-tracks of classics such as George Harrison's "Whats Life" and David Bowie's "Life on Mars". The audience will hear these classic recordings in a way never heard before. Through the use of pictures and film clips, Ken will also explain how some of these classic albums were made with artists that include The Beatles, Elton John, Lou Reed, Supertramp, David Bowie, and many more! The event will be taking place in the upstairs of Backroom Studios on February 20, 2009. The doors are at 8:00pm.

Thursday March 19th, 2009 - Rik Emmett Coming to MWI!
Rik Emmett is coming to the MWI Lecture Hall on March 19 at 7:30 p.m!!!! Inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as one of the founding members and lead singer for Triumph, Rik Emmett is also a multi-award winning soloist. Rik Emmett has his fair share of gold and platinum hanging on the wall after surviving three decades in the music business. Awards like Best Guitarist at the '81 Junos, induction into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame in '93, and Best Smooth Jazz Guitarist in 2005 highlight an ever-evolving career. There's a true singer / songwriter at the heart of it all - a multi-dimensional artist, with nothing to prove except the dignity and maturity of his continuing commitment to great music. This is event is open to the public; Metalworks Institute students are welcome to bring guests.
