Metalworks Institute at MTV Live
By Kasandra Cutting (Professional Sound & Business Student)
Metalworks Institute’s first and second term Entertainment Business Management and Professional Sound & Business students recently had the opportunity to visit the MTV studios, located in the historic Masonic Temple in downtown Toronto, to see the production of MTV Live.
I didn’t know what to expect entering the building, but as soon as I saw Nicole Holness and Daryn Jones, who are the current and recognizable hosts of MTV Live, I knew it was going to be awesome. While Nicole and Daryn were preparing to go to air, we had MTV employees show us around the entire building, and were able to see all of the MTV staffers working on video, music and post-production.
As a long-time MTV viewer, and knowing nothing about the industry, I expected gigantic rooms, colors, fancy props and artists walking around randomly; but obviously it’s a business, and those of us watching on television can’t see what goes on backstage. There were numerous small rooms throughout all four floors, with people sitting at desks answering phones and typing on their computers, or editing videos and music for MTV television programs. While it might sound like I wasn’t impressed or my expectations weren’t met, it was actually a very laid back, fun and exciting place.
Once I understood more about what happens behind the scenes, I sat along with the rest of the audience on the floor of the main stage and watched the production of MTV Live.
After meeting the hosts, and having our faces shown on TV from the audience during the broadcast, we were treated to a live performance by Canadian artist K-OS. Our visit ended with K-OS’s hit song “Sunday Morning,” which he didn’t have to sing half the time, considering everyone knew the lyrics.
Not only has MTV revolutionized the music industry, they also actively encourage their viewers and the public to join in and experience the behind-the-scenes production work that goes into the creation of many MTV programs.
