New Metalworks Institute Faculty

Doug Caldwell, like many others before him in the music business, began his career in the radio industry, spending six years in Nova Scotia developing his talents behind the microphone for Annapolis Valley Radio and Q104FM Rock Radio. As an announcer with various shifts during morning, midday, afternoon and evening, Doug developed a knack for personality driven on-air talent. Alongside his on-air duties, he also played an integral role in the development of the music library, as Music Director and custodian of music for the station.

Before long, the idea of working in Canada’s music industry led to a job as National Promotion Director for Island Records Canada. During his two years with Island, Doug worked with acts such as Melissa Etheridge, Marianne Faithful and Canada’s own Andrew Cash. Following his tenure at Island Records, Doug spent the next seven years with Virgin Music Canada in the roles of A&R Representative and National Marketing Manager, where he worked with an extensive list of well known acts such as Spice Girls, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz and many more.

Doug rounded out this chapter in his career by working the next seven years with major label EMI Music Canada, as Director of Marketing Strategies for EMI’s Associated Labels Division. During this time, Doug worked with many different acts and distributed labels involving various genres of music, from country, pop and rock, to dance to metal and aboriginal music.

Since leaving EMI in 2007, Doug has spent his time working independently with smaller labels and acts, providing them with assistance and guidance regarding their releases and tours.

Doug has also made his mark as a post secondary instructor for the past three years, teaching courses on music marketing and the history of popular music. Doug currently teaches Styles & Genres at Metalworks Institute.
