Glen Drover Visits Metalworks Institute
By Diana Gaspar (EBM Student)

Metalworks Institute recently hosted a guitar clinic/guest lecture from former Megadeth guitarist Glen Drover in the MWI Lecture Hall. Open to the public and Metalworks students, the clinic/lecture offered Drover a chance to amaze us with his skills. Clearly an avid musician, Mr. Drover spoke of his past, and how he had come to join Megadeth in 2004 with his brother and drummer, Shawn Drover. Although Megadeth was driven by front man Dave Mustaine’s vision, Glen stressed how amazing the chemistry was in the group and between the band members. He explained how each member contributed to the formation of the sound, and agreed that it did not matter whose idea was better, because the best option for the band was always picked, no matter who it came from.

After contributing to United Abominations (Megadeth’s latest CD) and doing a few tours with the band, Glen spoke of how he had grown past his musical performance career in terms of touring. Mr. Drover confirmed that this was part of the reason why he had left, with the main reason being a desire to spend more time with his family. After being away on tours performing, Glen had realized he did not want to miss seeing his son grow up. With this facet of his music career behind him, Mr. Drover talked about now focusing more on the producing side of music.

In addition to speaking about his career, Mr. Drover also spent time impressing everyone in attendance with his dynamic guitar talents. He played along with several Megadeth songs, including Burnt Ice, his favourite song off the last Megadeth album. Of course he also spent some time shredding, which was what most in attendance came to hear.

As someone who used to practice his guitar five hours a day, Glen Drover was clearly an inspiration to the numerous guitarists in the MWI Lecture Hall.
