Hip Hop at The Croc
By Laura Titchner (SPM Student)

Metalworks Institute's own Jae Lee, aka Syco, laying down his rhymes. On July 29, Metalworks Institute’s third-term Show Production students put on a charity Hip Hop Concert to raise money for Port Credit Secondary School’s Regional String Program. The show took place at The Crocodile Rock in Mississauga and featured Metalworks Institute’s own Syco, as well as hip hop artists iLL vibe, LS and SG INK.

In preparation for the event, we did everything from finding the acts and venue, writing up contracts, and ordering all of the required equipment, to packing the truck and setting up the audio and lighting for the show. We used skills we learned in many of our different courses this year to help us make the event a success.

In order to increase the money we raised for our chosen charity we held a raffle, which took place between acts throughout the night. Prior to the day of the show, we recruited many sponsors, including Metalworks Studios, West 49, Zellers, Long & McQuade, Shure, and Rogers. The list of prizes included recording time at Metalworks Studios, recording time at SG INK.’s studio, Toronto Blue Jays tickets, a skateboard deck and clothing from West 49, and much more.

The event attracted a great turnout of Metalworks students, staff members and guests, making the night a great success. We learned a great deal about what it takes to put on a show, and it was a great overall experience for everyone involved.
