February is always a short month, but there was certainly no shortage of events going on at Metalworks Institute. Here at the school we were fortunate to have not just one, but two guest lecturers visit the college! In order to best support students both during their studies and once they’ve graduated, it’s important for any career focused college to maintain positive relationships with industry professionals. That’s why we put an emphasis on building and maintaining our industry relationships; a process that’s made easier by our exclusive partnerships with Metalworks Studios and Metalworks Production Group.
Our first lecture of the month was from Andreas Rizek from SOCAN Music, who came to speak with Metalworks students about music licensing, publishing, and performance royalties. SOCAN – The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, is a Canadian performance rights organisation that represents the performing rights of more than 135,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.
Later in the month, students in Music Business class got to enjoy another guest lecture from Michael Perlmutter from Instinct Entertainment. Instinct entertainment is a music supervision, licensing and creative consultation company based in Toronto, Canada. They place music in television, film, online, and more. In his engaging lecture Michael discussed what’s involved in being a music supervisor and answered many student questions.
These guest lectures give students in all of our diploma programs a deeper understanding of the various job opportunities available in the industry, along with chances to ask questions to established professionals as they plan for their own careers.
Thank you Andreas and Michael for contributing to our students’ Metalworks Institute education!
There were also plenty of interesting student activities and projects. Please feel free to flip through the gallery for some snaps of the Metalworks Institute student experience!
